If you’re looking for a career in New York, you’re probably curious about what people are making.  Considering how expensive rent can be for certain buildings in the city, it’s amazing how some businesses can manage to even break even.

In this week’s update to our Helpful Resources series, we take a look at an interesting article in New York Magazine that dissected the inner workings of several types of businesses and jobs.  It provides some interesting insight on just where New York’s money comes from, and how each business makes its profit.

What goes around comes around.  Money goes from one pocket to another, to another… until hopefully it lands in yours.  This article looks at different businesses – a cab driver, a yoga studio, a drug dealer – and calculates what kind of profit they take in and where it comes from.

It’s fascinating to see what kinds of fares cab drivers hope for, and just how profitable dealing drugs can be!  Knowing more about where New Yorkers get their money can help you make better choices in your job hunt, or at least think twice before you spend.
